What if you were to come into a substantial amount of money for example winning the lottery or inheriting from a loved one after you had separated? Would you expect to keep it all to yourself or share it with your spouse? Most people may feel that the money would be theirs to keep and enjoy.  However, this is not always the case.

Whether your spouse could have a claim on the money would depend on both of your financial circumstances at the time the claim is made. Therefore even if you have no assets at the time you separate it is essential to take legal advice to ensure that you are protected in the future.  No one can predict what they may win or inherit in the future!
