During November 2009 and 2010 the private client team at Hine Solicitors gave their time and expertise to support the Will Aid scheme.
The scheme offers people an opportunity to put their affairs in order whilst donating to charity instead of paying a fee to Hine Solicitors. During the 2010 scheme Hine Solicitors raised over £2,000 for Will Aid. All of the money raised is distributed between nine of the country’s best loved charities: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland), Trocaire (N. Ireland).
Everyone needs a properly drawn up Will and according to latest research published by Will Aid, over 60% of British people do not have one. If a person dies without leaving a valid Will or one cannot be found then their estate is distributed according to the rules of intestacy. This may not produce the outcome the deceased would have expected.
Whatever your circumstances a Will is the only way of ensuring that your hard earned assets go to the people or causes you care about. It is a mistake to believe that a husband, wife or partner will automatically inherit if someone dies without a Will. If you have already made a Will it is important to check that it is up to date. Your circumstances may have changed over time and you may need to update it to ensure that it is valid.
