Divorce Discount featured on BBC News

15/12/2010

This morning, Katie Lowndes, from our family department appeared on Malcolm Boyden’s Breakfast radio show. There was a lively debate about divorce and the causes of relationship breakdown which you can hear on the BBC iPlayer by clicking onto this link.

Sadly divorce does happen. Whenever we see a new client we will advise them to consider whether counselling can help, whether their marriage can be saved, and refer them to a counselling service such as Relate. Also, our family lawyers are members of Resolution which is an organisation of lawyers who believe in a constructive and non-confrontational approach to divorce. If a client tells us their marriage has irretrievably broken down and they instruct us to issue divorce proceedings we will deliver that service for them.

It has been reported that more divorces happen in January. However, on the other hand, it may be that people are staying together for longer at the moment. Some people may not be able to afford to get divorced right now; many assets have decreased in value significantly in the last 2-3 years and it can be hard for people who want to sell and divide their assets. For instance, they may delay divorce proceedings because they want to wait until their assets have risen in value, perhaps to have a clean break from each other, or, to get a return on those assets that they would have done prior to the recession. Whatever a person’s reasons are for wanting a divorce, we are here to help.

As you may have heard, we are giving clients a 50% discount off divorce proceedings for the whole of January. We usually charge £800 plus VAT and disbursements for an uncontested divorce and we will be supplying the service for £400 plus VAT and disbursements. There are 2 further main sections of divorce which are not included in the promotion. The first is the arrangements for the children, and the second is the division of the marital finances. We cannot put a fixed price on those areas because the cost will depend on how complex the client’s situation is and every divorce is different. In short, the quicker the couple can reach agreement, the less expensive it will be. More information and our terms and conditions can be found on our family and home pages of our website.

We are here to help people who have come to the decision that they want to be divorced and guide them through what can be one of the most stressful times of their lives. We will be doing the hard work to get our clients out of a difficult situation so they do not have to. Also, the recession has affected most people, and we know that our promotion will ease the burden for some people.

The breakdown of any relationship gives rise to complex emotional, financial and practical issues. This is where our Family law team can help you and we will ensure that you receive straightforward, clear, common sense advice and support and guide you through divorce at a speed you are comfortable with.
